The Citizens' Panel was established in September 2022 and plays a pivotal role in supporting the Whole Family Equality Project. Comprised of Edinburgh residents representing ethnically diverse communities, the panel actively engages in all project stages, contributing their knowledge and ideas, and participating in decision-making processes to shape the direction of the project. This involvement is crucial to the project's overarching goal: empowering ethnically diverse communities by identifying and addressing prevalent inequalities.
In addition to influencing the project itself, our goal is to share the gained insights with stakeholders and policymakers across the city to drive broader change. The Panel’s activities are rooted in understanding the importance of lived experiences, capacity building, and trauma-informed practices for the group and its individuals. Within the represented groups, the Panel leverages individual strengths and peer support to create a collective effort.
The Citizens’ Panel's commitment to promoting equality for ethnically diverse individuals is grounded in the understanding that life is inherently intersectional. The Panel recognises that individuals face a variety of challenges and that discrimination extends beyond ethnic or racial backgrounds alone. The Panel aims to create an inclusive, supportive environment that recognises the multifaceted nature of human experiences. By addressing interconnected layers of discrimination, we advocate for a society where everyone can thrive, irrespective of their background, and embrace diversity.
Through dialogue, advocacy, and collaborative efforts, we seek to dismantle barriers and promote a world where equality is truly universal. Since its establishment, the Panel has actively participated in public consultations and is working to effect policy changes at higher levels to enhance human and civil rights. These efforts are geared towards benefiting communities not only in Edinburgh and the Lothians but also beyond, contributing to a more equitable and inclusive society.
